CRYSTAL HARMONY TO UNDERGO SCHEDULED SEPTEMBER DRYDOCK FOR MULTIMILLION DOLLAR REFURBISHMENT

A completely new Feng Shui-designed spa and fitness center and a new Connoisseur Club for after dinner cognacs and cigars are among the major construction projects slated for Crystal HarmonyÁøs 2002 fall drydock. Other areas to undergo refurbishment are the Galaxy Lounge, the shipÁøs main show room for its Broadway-style production shows, and CrystalÁøs signature Palm Court with its sweeping panoramic views. Fantasia, Crystal HarmonyÁøs Junior Activities Program venue, is being updated this summer.
Á¡We continually enhance the Crystal experience, even as our ships earn the industryÁøs highest awards and ratings,Á± says Gregg. L. Michel, president, Crystal Cruises. Á¡Our overall product delivery strategy includes a financial commitment to our ships designed to not only meet, but also exceed, discriminating travelersÁø expectations.Á±
Crystal Spa & Salon and Fitness Center
The Crystal Spa & Salon will be entirely reconstructed in a new layout and the design will follow Feng Shui principles, the ancient practice of balance and harmony that Crystal successfully introduced in the redesign of its Spas in 2000.
A total of seven treatment rooms—for services ranging from a frangipani hair and scalp conditioning treatment to an aromatherapy foot massage—and a private relaxation area on the SpaÁøs aft deck will increase the facility by 430 square feet. This luxurious space will allow guests to relax on the canopied sun deck before or after a treatment, and indulge in a steam shower or sauna. Other highlights include custom-designed manicure/pedicure areas with sunken foot bowls, well-suited to the Á¡Sole Delight Foot RitualÁ± with warmed aromatherapy oils and massage prior to a full pedicure.
The new dry float bed suite will contain an innovative sensory bed to create a feeling of weightlessness, ideal for Á¡Aroma SpaÁ± and other treatments. The luxurious suite may be used by a single guest or a couple, as one client can relax on a large couch while the other receives a treatment.
The state-of-the-art sauna and shower areas will feature showers with multiple head and side body jets, fiber optic lighting, and a selection of special rain and mist functions.
The enlarged Fitness Center, used for the lineÁøs complimentary yoga and Pilates instruction, as well as other classes and personal training sessions, will boast a larger selection of fitness equipment including cardio machines such as LifeFitness¢ç treadmills, cross trainers, recumbent and upright life cycles and stepper, all with heart rate sensors, the LifeFitness Pro Series¢ç of strength equipment, and a range of free weights and mats.
The new facility was designed by The Syntax Group, renowned for spa projects including ThailandÁøs Chiva-Som resort, the One Health Club & Spa in Edinburgh and HampshireÁøs Forest Mere. The Crystal Spa & Salon is operated by Steiner Leisure, renowned for its flagship Elemis day-spa in London and spas at The Aladdin in Las Vegas and the just opened Mohegun Sun in Connecticut.
Connoisseur Club
Due to the success of Crystal SymphonyÁøs Connoisseur Club, this intimate lounge with a private club atmosphere will also be created aboard Crystal Harmony beside the existing Avenue Saloon. Envisioned as the ideal space to relax quietly or join a small group of friends for a late night drink, highlights will include an island humidor with individual compartments for guestÁøs cigar storage during a cruise, and an eclectic furniture and appointment mix reminiscent of the smoking lounge, or den, of an adventurous explorer.
SMC Design, the UK firm who designed Crystal SymphonyÁøs Connoisseur Club, is also overseeing the project aboard Crystal Harmony.
Galaxy Lounge
A dramatic new look is planned for the Galaxy Lounge. This 450-seat performance space will boast all new soft goods to enhance the elegant environment in which guests can relax and be entertained. In addition to new ceiling and wall finishes, window treatments, carpet, seating, and cocktail tables, the hydraulic stage will be refinished with a new stained wood floor and dramatic scarlet velvet curtains.
Overseeing the refurbishment is Brennan Beer Gorman Monk / Interiors (BBGM), a full-service interior design firm whose recent projects include The St. Regis in NY; The Plaza, NY; the Peninsula, Hong Kong; and the Westin Plaza, Singapore.

Palm Court
The Palm Court, an open lounge with 180¢» views, is perfect for quiet daytime relaxation or reading, and is also the venue for the CaptainÁøs welcome aboard and farewell parties, elaborately-themed afternoon teas, and classical music performances. The Deck 11 lounge will be outfitted with new carpeting, vintage club chairs, and cocktail tables, selected by SMC Design.

In keeping with Crystal CruisesÁø penchant for quality details, the line selected furniture and fabrics from renowned designers including A. Rudin Furniture, LA; Kingcome Sofas, UK who exclusively craft made-to-order furniture; Zimmer & Rhode, UK; Andrew Martin International, UK; Lee Jofa, NY; Baker Knapp & Tubbs, LA; Donghia, UK; Marvic Textiles, UK; and Porta Romana, UK.
The refurbishment will be completed at Victoria Drydock in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada. The 14-day drydock for the 50,000-ton, 940-guest Crystal Harmony will begin on Sept. 25, 2002. Immediately following, she will depart San Francisco on Oct. 8 for a rare eight-day Mexican Riviera cruise.
