44% of Thailand holidays have been booked by couples, here’s why it’s becoming the romantic capital

A record number of UK jetsetters have travelled to Thailand since the pandemic. In fact, latest figures show that more than a million Brits have had their passports stamped, but why do so many people want to go?

New research from Destination2 found that although solo travellers take up 65%-75% of tourism in Thailand, the destination is attracting far more than its traditional backpacker audience. In fact, 44% of Thailand bookings in 2026 are by couples, 31% are from families and 21% are from adult groups.

Google searches are increasing for various types of holiday, showcasing the growth in popularity for customisable adventures. To help travellers plan their perfect Thailand escape, Daniel Frost, Product Manager at Destination2, has provided recommendations and advice on the most searched terms over the last 12 months, including:

-        A 100% increase in searches for “Last minute Thailand holidays all inclusive”

-        A 67% increase in searches for “Romantic places to stay in Thailand”

Although the mix of vibrancy, affordability and versatility is a huge appeal for solo travellers, Daniel delves into must-visit towns and cities, hidden gems and more for families and couples looking for something unique:

Romantic Destinations

From rooftop bars to secluded accommodations, boat tours, floating breakfasts, lantern festivals and cooking classes, it’s no surprise that searches for “romantic places to stay in Thailand” have increased by 67% in the last 12 months.

Daniel recommends: “Idyllic islands like Koh Samui, Phuket and Phi Phi are amazing choices for paradisiacal beaches, while cities like the capital, Bangkok, and lush forest regions like Chiang Mai boast their own hidden gems and iconic attractions.

Longtail boat rides are an excellent way to discover hidden gems, as well as spellbinding beaches such as Railay, which is split into two sections, East and West, for the choice between outdoor excitement or pure bliss in a serene environment.

Explore Bangkok’s or Phuket’s’ aromatic night markets for delicious local cuisine sold at a street food stall, exploring the area via tuk-tuk is always fun. Or, for something extra-special on your ultra romantic getaway, visit a Michelin-starred restaurant. Many hotels offer Thai cooking classes, a great way to spend meaningful time together.”

Spiritual Awakenings

Ancient Buddhist traditions and Thai monks are an immersive part of Thai culture, where healing and meditation are a huge pull for the 25% increase in searches for “Religious holidays in Thailand.”

Daniel explains: “Thailand offers spiritual escapism like no other place. Meditation and chats with monks counteract the busy cities with tranquillity. Cultural and Religious festivals take place throughout the year, such as Songkran (Thai New Year) in April, Loy Krathong in November (honouring the Goddess of the river), Makha Bucha in Feb-March (the full moon of the third lunar month).

Planning a trip around these sacred days will set the foundations for a visit to the breathtakingly beautiful Chiang Rai’s White, Blue and Red Temples, spontaneous monk gatherings, vibrant parades, candlelight processions, sunset rituals and mountain pilgrimages.

Dates for religious festivals and events change yearly based on the lunar calendar, it’s important that visitors check before booking for confirmation.”

Family Friendly

While Thailand is often associated with bustling cities and nightlife, it also offers plenty for families.“Family holidays to Thailand” searches have surged by 23% this year, prompting Daniel to share her advice for an unforgettable family adventure, she adds:

“Phuket (Bang Tao & Karon) is known for having 6km sandy shorelines and the Splash Jungle Water Park, a balance of peaceful beaches and activities for the kids make it a very popular destination for families.

Khao Lak is known as a quieter, nature-focused alternative to Phuket. Several hotels such as The Sands by Katahani offer facilities such as children’s pools with a mini slide, as well as activities like beach volleyball and Thai cooking classes for both adults and kids.

Whilst in Khao Lak, visiting an elephant sanctuary makes for a wonderful family experience, as well as seeing baby turtles at the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre. For thrill-seeking families, Ziplining at Phoenix Adventure Park in Chiang Mai is also a memorable family experience.”

Wellbeing Retreats

Tying in with religious and spiritual experiences, meditation, yoga and mindfulness are another integral part of Thai traditions. Searches for “Thailand wellness holiday” have increased by 22% in the last 12 months, and Daniel recommends the following resorts:

“Keemala, Phuket is a stunning hilltop sanctuary offering dedicated yoga and meditation classes led by expert instructors. For a beachfront experience, Aleenta, Phuket includes specialised wellness programmes that include structured meditation sessions and daily yoga.

In northern Thailand, Shangri-La, Chiang Mai provides a peaceful sanctuary, featuring tranquil gardens specifically suited for meditation and mindfulness. Whilst The Sukhothai, Bangkok is an oasis of calm within the bustling capital, surrounded by six acres of tropical gardens and lotus ponds.

When choosing a wellbeing retreat, start by deciding whether you’re looking for yoga, meditation, spa treatments or a combination of experiences..”

Action and Adventure

Adrenaline junkies will have no problem finding an adventure in the dramatic landscapes of Thailand. Daniel concludes: “Jungle and ziplines are an incredible way to take in valleys and rainforests. Chiang Mai and Phuket have some of the largest high rope courses in Thailand.

To explore the unparalleled jewel blue coasts, scuba diving, snorkelling, white water rafting and waterfall climbing offer a stunning perspective of the country. From the Song Phraek River in Phang Nga, to the Mae Taeng River in northern Thailand. I also recommend excursions to the Similan Islands, which are renowned for some of Thailand’s clearest waters.

National parks are dotted across Thailand for incredible hikes and treks, or if you prefer to drive, quad biking is also a popular option.”
