WestJet to pay first dividend
WestJet Airlines has confirmed it will pay its first dividend to shareholders as the Canadian airline sketched a positive outlook for its next quarter. Calgary-based WestJet confirmed it would pay a quarterly dividend of five Canadian cents per share and reinstated its share buy-back program.
WestJet secures American Airlines alliance
WestJet Airlines has secured its first interline agreement with a US-based partner, linking up with American Airlines. The deal means customers travelling to Canada and transferring to WestJet flights can purchase a single ticket and check bags through to their final destination, as the Calgary-based carrier seeks to expand its presence in the recovering US market.
Canadian airlines rebound in second quarter
Demand for transborder travel has prompted a marked improvement in the financial performance of both WestJet and Air Canada. While the national flag-carrier remained in the red for the second quarter, WestJet – which has remained profitable throughout the recession – recorded a net profit of C$21 million.
Southwest Airlines to terminate agreement with WestJet
Southwest Airlines notified WestJet today of its intent to terminate the agreement to offer connecting service between the United States and Canada with WestJet. Recently, WestJet requested significant changes to the agreement that the two airlines have had in place since 2008, and WestJet has since reaffirmed and clarified its request. Southwest cannot agree with the modifications to the confidential agreement.
