Routes, UNWTO reach new agreement
Routes and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) have reached an agreement to work together to advance the understanding of all matters that concern air connectivity and travel facilitation.

UNWTO and CTO strengthen partnership
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their collaboration in promoting the tourism sector in the region as a key driver of sustainable development.
UNWTO supports Qatar’s new tourism strategy
UNWTO is supporting Qatar to implement its new tourism strategy through collaboration in the areas of legislation, institutional strengthening, statistics, marketing and capacity building. During an official visit to the country, where he met H.E. Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar and attended the launch of Qatar’s Tourism Strategy, UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai welcomed the high priority afforded to the tourism sector in Qatar.
UNWTO to host first ICAO & UNWTO Tourism Ministers Summit
Mr. Taleb Rifai, the Secretary General of the UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organization) said, as he addressed the 5th edition of INVEST TOUR, the tourism investment and business forum for Africa that was again held in Madrid as part of FITUR 2014, that for the first time, the UNWTO and ICAO are joining together to organise a meeting for African ministers of tourism and also for ministers of transport to sit together and to look at air transport with tourism in mind.
UNWTO reports above trend tourism growth for 2013
International tourist arrivals grew by five per cent in 2013, reaching a record 1,087 million arrivals, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Despite global economic challenges, international tourism results were well above expectations, with an additional 52 million international tourists travelling the world in 2013.
UNWTO: Europe leads global tourism recovery
In the first nine months of 2013, international tourism grew by five per cent according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. The number of international tourist arrivals reported by destinations around the world increased by some 41 million between January and September, growing above UNWTO’s initial forecast and creating an important stimulus to the receiving economies.
UNWTO and UNESCO join forces
UNWTO and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) forged a new cooperation agreement consolidating efforts on sustainable tourism and the protection of natural and cultural heritage. The MoU is the third agreement between UNESCO and UNWTO since 1979.
UNWTO to support Libya tourism development
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation and Libyan ministry of tourism have signed an agreement outlining the development and phased implementation of a tourism strategy and action plan. Under the agreement UNWTO will provide support to Libya´s ministry of tourism in its strategic tourism development through institutional building and governance, sustainable development, marketing and human resource development.
Jeffery takes up UNWTO ethical tourism role
Fiona Jeffery, former chairman of World Travel Market and founder of the international water aid charity Just a Drop has been appointed a member of new World Committee on Tourism Ethics, part of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. Jeffery, who will serve on this prestigious group until 2017, is known for her pioneering work on advancing sustainability and ethics in international tourism spanning 20 years.

With one week left until World Tourism Day (WTD) on 27 September, preparations are on the final stretch in the Maldives, the host of this year’s official celebrations, and in many countries around the world around the 2013 theme, “Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future”.
UNWTO partners with Japan Association of Travel Agents
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA). The agreement, signed on the occasion of JATA Travel Showcase 2013, aims to reinforce the knowledge and positioning of the tourism sector in Asia and the Pacific.
