Leading tour operator Thomas Cook North America has signed up with Advantage Travel & Cruise Centres to launch a new Canadian network. Composed of a dual franchise and affiliate network, the agreement will provide partners “with the ability to access the Thomas Cook brand, and with that its global expertise and strength”.

Tour operator Thomas Cook has said it will cut capacity from the UK as “fragile consumer sentiment” continues to slow trade. While bookings are ahead of last year in Northern Europe, principally Germany, a “weaker picture” in the UK has seen the operator take a “prudent approach to capacity”.

Unrest in the Middle East and North Africa has seen oil prices rocket in recent weeks, with Thomas Cook the latest to feel the heat. With Brent Crude oil presently trading at approximately $115 a barrel – up from under $100 at the start of February – the tour operator has added a fuel surcharge of £15 to short-haul flights, £25 to medium haul and £40 to long-haul departures.

British tour operator Thomas Cook has outlined a plan for global expansion with deals in the growing markets of Russia and China. In Russia the operator agreed to create a joint venture with Intourist, taking a 50.1 per cent stake and paying £29m in cash and shares, with China the next target.

Thomas Cook has confirmed it will merge its high-street store network with rival The Co-operative Group to create the largest chain in the UK. In a move designed to “strengthen the competitive position” of both chains, the new group will trade from 1,204 locations across the country.
