IATA: Upswing in cargo brightens cautious demand outlook

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released traffic results for November 2012 which showed an improvement in both passenger and air freight demand. Air travel was 4.6% higher compared to November 2011, up on the October result of 2.9%. Air freight volumes edged up 1.6% over the same period after declining 2.6% in October, year to year. Passenger capacity rose 3.2% and load factor improved one percentage point to 77.3% compared to the year-ago period.

The International Air Transport Association has released an industry traffic forecast showing airlines are expect to welcome some 3.6 billion passengers in 2016. That is about 800 million more than the 2.8 billion passengers carried by airlines in 2011.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global traffic results for September showing a continued slowdown in the rate of traffic growth. Demand for passenger traffic was 4.1% above the level of September 2011. For air cargo, demand growth was even weaker at 0.6%.

The American Society of Travel Agents and Business Travel Coalition have rejected emphatically the claim by IATA that the new “standard” it has developed for retail distribution was the “culmination of 12 months of intense coordination across the value chain with participation from airlines, global distribution systems, the travel agency community including online travel agencies and IT providers and their respective trade organizations.” IATA made the assertion in a press release at the end of its World Passenger Symposium in Abu Dhabi.

The International Air Transport Association has presented the government of Saudi Arabia with a study quantifying the economic benefits of aviation to the local economy. The report was presented to His Highness Prince Fahad Alabdullah, who is president of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and chairman of the Board of Saudi Arabian Airlines, by Tony Tyler, IATA director general.
