The Philippines is braced for a major tourism setback after eight tourists from Hong Kong were killed when a bus was hijacked in Manila. The police conceded they had committed a number of blunders, as outrage grew over the bloody 12-hour siege that was broadcast live on television.

Safety concerns in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics have been raised after 35 tourists staying at the luxury InterContinental Rio were taken hostage by an armed gang involved in a shoot-out with police.
