Copa Airlines reaches fleet milestone with Boeing delivery

Copa Airlines has taken delivery of the 100th airplane to join its fleet, a Boeing 737-800 decorated with a special decal celebrating the airline achieving this important milestone. The airplane, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, flew from Seattle to its Panama City home base, where it was welcomed by a special ceremony.

Panama president Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez and United States president Barack Obama have witnessed a historic agreement in which Copa Airlines and Boeing announced an order for 61 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 airplanes. The order, valued at $6.6 billion at list prices, is the largest commercial transaction ever between a Panamanian and a US-based company. The signing ceremony took place in Panama City as leaders from throughout the Western hemisphere gathered for the seventh Summit of the Americas.

Copa Airlines, today announced growth plans for the first half of 2014, which include the launch of new direct flights from Panama to: Montreal; Canada, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Georgetown, Guyana.  In addition, Copa will add aircraft to its fleet, for a 10 percent growth in capacity.

Copa Airlines has added Liberia, in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica, to its list of destinations with the launch of a new flight from Panama. The new Tocumen (Panama) – Liberia (Costa Rica) route operates on Sundays and Thursdays, departing Panama at 09:52 and arriving in Liberia at 10:23.

Star Alliance has welcomed Avianca, TACA Airlines and Copa Airlines as members, thereby cementing its presence in Latin America and adding close to 50 new airports to the network. The development means passengers will now be able to connect seamlessly through the Copa Airlines hubs in Panama City (Panama) and Bogota (Colombia) and the Avianca, TACA Airlines hubs in Bogota (Colombia), San Salvador (El Salvador), Lima (Peru) and San Jose (Costa Rica).
