Eurostar sales show signs of recovery

Eurostar has announced its Q3 2009 results which report a recovery in sales and “some signs of an upturn in business travel”. Sale and revenues for the year to date are down slightly and the business travel environment remains “challenging” but overall sales revenue in Q3 2009 is up 6.8% on the same period last year.

The business travel sector will pick up towards the end of 2010, the head of the world’s largest business travel association has predicted. Kevin Maguire, chairman of the National Business Travel Association said “the end of 2010/ Q1 2011”, was the earliest travel management companies could expect to see a return to growth. However, the effects of the global recession have led to a paradigm shift in the way we travel – and will not return to the way it was.

Two important travel industry studies have shown that deep cuts in travel can harm a company’s bottom line. Oxford Economics, in a study released this week found that each dollar spent on travel by a U.S. company can expect an average profit boost of $3.80. Meanwhile, a study from IHS Global Insight estimates that U.S. companies could miss out on $193 billion in profit for 2009 because they cut too deeply into business travel.
