Nine killed on Holland America Line sightseeing flight The Westerdam was on a seven night cruise out of Seattle

A sightseeing plane carry passengers from a Holland America Line cruise ship has crashed with the loss of nine lives in east Alaska.

Eight passengers from the Westerdam were killed along with the pilot of the aircraft.

The wreckage of the aircraft was located by rescue teams earlier, situated approximately 250 metres above Ella Lake, north-east of the town of Ketchikan.

Bad weather forced the suspension of recovery efforts late on Thursday, with further attempts to be made on Friday.

The passengers were guests from the Westerdam, a ship on a seven-day cruise that departed Seattle on Saturday.

Promech Air, an airline based in Ketchikan, operated the air excursion sold through Holland America Line.

There was no immediate indication of why the DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter turboprop crashed.
