Hanoi Tourism Showcases Unique Cultural Experiences Through Heritage

Hanoi tourism thrives by transforming heritage into unique experiences, attracting millions of visitors with innovative programs at iconic cultural sites.

As we passed through the entrance of Hoa Lo Prison, we came across a lively group of international visitors enthusiastically holding their tickets, hurrying toward the much-anticipated “Sacred Night” experience.

Despite ticket prices ranging between 299,000 and 499,000 VND, the demand for this night tour remains incredibly high, with sold-out shows becoming the norm. This exceptional live performance, staged in the evocative setting of a revolutionary prison, has become a must-visit attraction for travelers in Hanoi. Brought to life by a team of talented actors through meticulous staging and heartfelt performances, the show continues to carry the essence of Vietnamese culture to a global audience.

During a planned meeting, Le Xuan Kieu, the Director of the Temple of Literature – Imperial Academy, passionately introduced us to the night program “The Quintessence of Dao Hoc.” This innovative cultural experience immerses visitors in a unique, profound, and sophisticated atmosphere. The program reimagines the Temple of Literature as a space brimming with creativity and emotions, captivating both domestic and international tourists. Le Xuan Kieu’s narrative underscores the efforts of Hanoi’s cultural pioneers to break away from traditional approaches, embracing bold and inspiring ideas to enhance the city’s appeal.

The remarkable success of the Hoa Lo Prison tour and the night program at the Temple of Literature highlights the potential of cultural resources when leveraged effectively. These initiatives demonstrate how Hanoi’s tourism sector can transform its heritage into an invaluable asset, driving significant growth for the industry.

Leaders in Hanoi’s tourism sector are showcasing their strategic vision by not only capitalizing on the historic legacy of Thang Long but also by crafting innovative experiences that resonate deeply with local identity.

Several creative spaces have become iconic features of Hanoi’s cultural landscape. For example, the Hoan Kiem Lake walking area has hosted nearly 500 events over the past few years, drawing significant attention from both local and international audiences. Over the past five years, Hanoi Book Street has attracted over three million visitors, contributing an estimated 29 billion VND in revenue.

However, despite these successes, challenges remain. The rate of return visits to Hanoi’s attractions is modest. While tourism is a critical sector for the capital, international visitors to Hanoi spent only 91.5–113.5 USD per day in 2023, while domestic tourists spent 60.5–76 USD daily. By comparison, mid-2024 data shows that visitors to Khanh Hoa spent an average of 5.3 million VND per trip, and Ho Chi Minh City visitors spent 4.52 million VND, whereas Hanoi’s average visitor expenditure was a modest 2.93 million VND.

The disparity underscores the need for Hanoi to further innovate and enhance its tourism offerings, ensuring that its rich cultural and historical resources are fully utilized to attract more visitors and inspire them to extend their stay while increasing their spending.
