DMRC to add 800 More Lifts and Escalators in Phase-III

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will add another 800 lifts and escalators to provide a more safe and convenient journey to Metro commuters during its Phase III project execution.

Presently, the Delhi Metro operates 399 lifts and 490 escalators across its 140 Metro Stations, 8 Depots and other installations in the system which are maintained by one of the largest team of Maintainers in India. These lifts and escalators are further regularly checked by a team of Inspector of Lifts, nominated by the Government of National Capital Territory (GNCTD) of Delhi. To ease the process, DMRC is planning to evolve an automatic monitoring and rectification system in Phase III.

Approximately 72 crore Metro commuters use these lifts and escalators every year while traversing in Delhi Metro. On a daily basis, 12 lakh people use escalators while 3 lakh use lifts .The DMRC has, thus, been able to provide a safe and hassle-free journey to all Metro commuters without registering any incident of trapping or failure in 2011.

In order to spread more awareness among the public for safe use of lifts and escalators, Delhi Metro has tied up with Bharat Scouts and Guides of Northern Railways who are guiding and educating the passengers in the Metro system on a daily basis. Approximately 125 Scouts and Guides are helping DMRC in observing ‘Safety Awareness Week’ from 1st January to 7th January, 2012.

In addition, Delhi Metro has provided additional escalator for Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Laxmi Nagar, Akshardham and Jasola-Apollo Metro Stations. Besides, a new lift is under installation at the entry of Patel Nagar Metro Station and an Auto Car Call register has been provided in two floor lifts by virtue of which there is no need to press any button for going up or down.
