Alitalia Confirms The Decision Unilaterally Taken By KLM To Terminate The Alliance

Alitalia confirms the decision unilaterally taken by KLM to terminate the alliance agreed in 1999. Such decision has been taken by the Board of KLM because of the uncertainties related to the future and the growth of the new Malpensa airport, whose development was however guaranteed by the Decree issued by the Italian Minister Mr Bersani. The decree was regulating the distribution of traffic on the Milan airport system achieving its final implementation in the recent weeks.

Alitalia still believes to be able to achieve its strategic objectives relying on its relevant potentialities of its strategic assets and its development perspectives deriving from its strong position on the Italian and European markets and its consolidated position on the intercontinental market.

A meeting of the Board of Directors has been called for Tuesday, 2 May 2000.
