April Load Factor Slightly Below Last Year

Overall traffic:
April traffic increased by 1%, while capacity increased by 3%. Consequently, overall load factor decreased by 1.1 percentage points from 77.9% in April 2000 to 76.8% this year.

Passenger traffic:
Passenger traffic increased by 2%, whereas capacity increased by 3%. Passenger load factor decreased by 0.3 of a percentage point to 80.3% compared to March 2000. In the route area Europe capacity declined by 3%, while traffic increased by 4% resulting in a load factor increase of 5 percentage points. Despite the softening economy in the USA, the North Atlantic load factor showed a slight increase of 0.8 of a percentage point. On the Asia Pacific routes load factors declined mainly due to the softening of the market to Indonesia.
The load factor of KLM`s Business Class showed an improvement. Especially on the route areas North Atlantic, Africa and Central and South Atlantic, the new World Business Class contributed to this increase.

Cargo traffic:
Cargo traffic equaled last year`s level, whereas capacity increased by 3%. Overall cargo load factor decreased by 2.4 percentage points to 67.4%. A slowdown in the Asian, mainly Japanese markets became more visible resulting in lower traffic from Asia Pacific to Europe. However traffic and load factors from Europe to Asia Pacific are still increasing compared to last year.

The launch of these products is an important step in realizing operational excellence at the interfaces of the logistic chain. All these standardized services have been developed in cooperation with the customers. Building on these partnerships KLM Cargo is ready to further develop and fine-tune the product offering.
