Royal Opening for Barbados Pavilion

It was announced today that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will open the restored Barbados Pavilion during his visit to the Caribbean island next month.  Prince Philip will unveil a plaque on 18 October to commemorate the official opening of the renovated building in the Garrison Historic Area, which has lain in ruins for more than 60 years. He will also present Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards to 20 local students during his visit to the venue.
The Barbados Pavilion began life in 1806 as the Purveyors Quarters of the General Hospital for the British Army and is part of one of the oldest British Military Garrisons in the world.  Following a sensitive restoration project in line with United Nations and Green Globe environmental guidelines, it is now the first environmentally-designed facility of its kind in the Caribbean and will re-open as a prestigious private membership club, accessible to overseas visitors as well as the local and regional community.
It will also be home to a world-class international conference and events centre, a colonial-style bar and a gourmet restaurant headed by a Michelin-star-accredited Executive Chef. In time, five-star hotel accommodation and a European health spa will also be added to the facilities.
The aim of James Blades, Chief Executive Officer of The Barbados Pavilion, has been to create an impressive venue which will bring elegance and prestige to the south coast, create jobs for local people, and provide a comfortable, welcoming environment in which members are keen to conduct meetings and host social gatherings.
In addition, Blades has pledged to donate a percentage of all membership fees and profits to select projects in the community, with a special emphasis on children, the environment, culture and heritage.  So, while the re-opening of The Barbados Pavilion is a significant step in the regeneration of the south coast of the island, the benefits it will generate are expected to be widespread.
