Ice forces Gatwick to close only runway
Gatwick‘s ability to deal with cold weather has been called into question after its only runway had to be closed due to ice, resulting in the delay of some 100 flights in and out of the airport.Hundreds of passengers are still facing cancellations, delays or diversions as the airport continued to try to de-ice the runway and taxi stands.
A spokeswoman for BAA blamed “exceptional weather conditions” for the delays.
She said: “The airport suffered an expected snow flurry and sudden fall in temperature. Gatwick Airport apologises for any disruption this may have to passengers’ travel plans today and we are working closely with our airline and other business partners to minimise the impact and reopen the runway as soon as it is safe to do so.”
