New appointment for IHG

IHG has named John Merkin, senior vice president, Brand Management, Holiday Inn Brands, the Americas.

Based in Atlanta and reporting to Mark Wells, senior vice president, Brand Management, The Americas, Merkin is responsible for the overall strategic direction for the Holiday Inn family of brands, which includes Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.  He oversees the development of brand communication strategies, tactical marketing promotions, revenue management and new product development.

“John brings a wealth of relevant experience to his new role,” said Mark Wells.  “In his 21 years with IHG, he has been involved in many key projects, from his close involvement in the development of the new Holiday Inn prototype, to his leadership of the integration of the Candlewood Suites brand.  This experience, along with his lead role in driving our strategic review of owner needs across the globe, will be crucial as we look to continue the legacy of one of America’s greatest brands.”

Mr. Merkin most recently served as vice president, franchise operations, North America, IHG, where he was responsible for leading the quality, standards and franchise administration departments.  In this position, Mr. Merkin played a crucial role in the rejuvenation of the Holiday Inn brand and recently led the development of IHG’s global franchise plan, using his considerable expertise in this area.  Prior to this he served as director, hotel innovations and channel marketing, Holiday Inn, where he was responsible for managing the strategic positioning and implementation of Holiday Inn product marketing, as well as administering the Holiday Inn prototype taskforce.  Mr. Merkin has also held roles of increasing responsibility in his 21 years with IHG in areas such as information technology, hotel operations and product development.

Mr. Merkin earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Southern Illinois University and a master’s degree in marketing and management strategy from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
