London Eye celebrates 25 million visitors

The British Airways London Eye celebrates its journey to become London’s most iconic landmark by hosting an online photography competition that goes live today. Visitors from the last 7 years can share their memories and upload their photos from the British Airways London Eye via the website www.londoneye.com/photography .

Since opening in 2000 an average of 1,000 visitors an hour have stepped onto London’s favourite attraction. Each of the 32 specially designed capsules offer panoramic views of the capital come night, day, rain or shine. Its award winning design and unique offering has helped the British Airways London Eye become a hugely popular feature of London’s skyline. 3.5 million visitors a year take in the sights of the capital from the iconic 21st century landmark.

The competition will be live for a month . One winning photo, chosen by a panel of judges, will be framed on permanent display at the British Airways London Eye ticket office, inside County Hall. The photographer will also receive a year’s pass to all Tussauds Group attractions and a bottle of Laurent-Perrier champagne. All photos entered will become part of an incredible mosaic which will be on permanent display at the British Airways London Eye ticket office.

* 2,000 people were employed to construct the British Airways London Eye including an entire alpine village who assisted in testing the capsule embarkation procedures.

* The rim weighs 800 tonnes and includes 64 ‘dampers’, each with a mass of 500 kg and adjusted to cope with the wind; without this the wheel would sway sideways 2-3 meters. The sway is 150mm with dampers.
