Bahamas gets first over water spa

The first over-water spa in the Bahamas is opening at Kamalame Cay, a 19-room, 96-acre private island escape just off Andros Island in the Bahamas Archipelago.
The resort introduced its 2,000-square-foot Spa in early 2006. The two-story building is sited at the very end of the new 200-foot Kamalame Pier. Because of this location, clients seem literally to float in any of the five airy treatment rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows open to the views and the soothing sounds of the turquoise surf below. Custom spa packages can include champagne lunches on the Spa?s veranda where yoga sessions are held. The range of restorative programs includes massage, body and facial treatments.

Before and after being soothed in the over-the-water Spa, diving enthusiasts can tap into a new, fully equipped PADI dive center.

Biotropica, a spa product company located in the Bahamas, has provided all-natural body scrubs and oils for an authentic pampering island experience. Following is a sampling of spa treatments.

* Bahamian Boreh (60 minutes) echoes a traditional Balinese treatment, a total body, deep heat experience that increases circulation, soothes muscle aches and exfoliates skin. It incorporates a warming spice and an herb body mask followed by a gentle, cooling
* Kamalame Coconut Body Glow for Sensitive Skin (60 minutes) mixes freshly shredded young coconut (rich in nutrients) with other natural ingredients to create a gentle and effective body scrub. The finale includes an all-natural conditioning treatment that is applied after the scrub to smooth and soothe the entire body.

* Seaweed Botanical Wrap (50 minutes) is a tropical treatment using a synergistic blend of pure minerals and sea extracts to nourish, soften and tone the skin. After a gentle sea salt exfoliation, these detoxifying agents are applied to aid in purifying the body as well as the soul. A deep moisturizing massage follows.

* Biotropica takes inspiration for its products from the warm tropical sun, rich nourishing seawater, deeply scented salt air and the relaxed attitude that comes with island life. Its carefully formulated products use such natural elements as sea salts, exotic oils and select plant extracts, including island spices.

The resort is a 20-minute drive from the Andros Town Airport serviced by charter or scheduled service from Nassau and Fort Lauderdale. Transportation to Kamalame Cay is provided by taxi and a three-minute ferry ride.  Once on the Cay, guests have a personal golf cart to meander and explore the property.
