Three days of national mourning have been declared in Nigeria for the passengers and crew of the Bellview Airlines Boeing 737 which crashed shortly after take-off on Saturday night. The aircraft was on its way to NIgeria’s capital, Abuja, when it came down in the northern part of Lagos. The crew had sent a distress call but the cause of the crash is not yet known and will be investigated in the coming days. Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged prayer for the victims and their families.

Bellview Airlines, a private NIgerian company has suspended all its flights from Lagos and the company’s management said the crash was the first by one of its planes in the company’s 12-year history, though Nigeria does have a very poor air safety record.
