Virgin Launches SMS Technology for Tennis Fans
Virgin Atlantic has introduced a new text messaging feature for passengers flying to North America to keep them up-to-date with the latest Wimbledon results throughout the Championships.
As part of Virgin Atlantic’s award-winning in-flight entertainment system, users can request text updates to be sent via satellite to their seat with scores for the day’s Wimbledon games.
Sir Richard Branson, chairman of Virgin Atlantic said: “Virgin Atlantic is delighted to offer passengers the opportunity to catch up on the latest news from Wimbledon. For our passengers it will certainly be plane, set and match!”
This system uses data from the same IBM system that is powering the official web site www.wimbledon.org, TV graphics and scoreboards.
“This is a great initiative from Virgin Atlantic,” said Chris Lee, IBM. “Whether in the air with Virgin Atlantic or at your desk, IBM technology can bring you the very latest results and action from SW19.”
Wimbledon scores are available at the official web site. This year a new ‘Shot Tracker’ feature charts play graphically as it happens, providing a virtual courtside experience. To date, nearly two million unique users have visited the website, up by more than 50% this time last year.
