Santo Domingo Goes Crazy for Merengue
The pulse and fever of the Dominican people is demonstrated in their passion for the Merengue, their national dance. In honour of this sensual art form, the Dominican Republic hosts Merengue festivals every year during the last week of July and first week of August and again in October. The largest festival, held in the capitol city of Santo Domingo along the main seaside thoroughfare, El Malecon, attracts the world’s top dancing talent to the bustling city. Everybody takes part - musicians, dancers, singers and casual observers, who can’t help but get caught up in the festivities. Smaller festivals are hosted in Puerto Plata and almost every city and town around the country.
In the spirit of the island’s beat, all five of the Iberostar all-inclusive hotels and resorts in the Dominican Republic offer merengue classes to their guests as part of the resort’s entertainment program.
The teachers, expert Merengue dancers, are quick to spread the enthusiasm. So much so, that many guests are soon as passionate about this fast-paced, alluring dance as the Dominicans are themselves.
