Opodo Takes its First Step into Italy

Opodo
today announced that it has signed a Management Services Agreement with Eviaggi to take over the operational management of the Italian Internet travel portal. The Rome based portal, which was founded in 2000, became a 100% subsidiary of Amadeus, Opodo’s majority shareholder, in 2001. Offering a full range of travel products, including flights, hotels, car hire and package holidays, Eviaggi is one of the major online players on the Italian market, with a market share of over 15% of all air bookings booked in Italy via online travel agencies.

Bart Tompkins, Acting CEO of Opodo commented, “Going forward, a key part of Opodo’s strategy is to enter new markets and assuming operational responsibility for Eviaggi is an ideal first step into Italy. During the next few months we will be looking at the potential deeper integration of Opodo’s products and services with Eviaggi, to maximise the synergies between the two companies.

Indications are that the Italian online market, although in its relative infancy, is beginning to grow, and the expertise of the local team will prove invaluable as we work together on launching Opodo’s fourth European market.”
