Active Hotels has been bought by US travel retailer Priceline for £90 million.
The Cambridge-based online hotel agent will be the platform for European expansion of Priceline. Active Hotels chief executive, Andrew Phillipps will stay on with Priceline to oversee European operations.
Priceline.com sells flights, car hire, package holidays and cruises in addition to hotels. In the quarter ended June 30, priceline.com claims to have amassed gross bookings of $470 million.
Commenting on the acquisition Mr Phillipps said: “This deal is great news for all involved. For our hotel customers, we expect that this will provide additional US demand from one of the market leaders. We believe that our pricing model will continue to put real pressure on competitors.
“For websites which work with us, the deal should provide low-priced hotel rooms in the US, complementing our market-leading European stock.”
