The city has a population of over 800,000 and is renowned for its beautiful lake scenery as well as its fine silk production. A small, walled city in the early 19th century, Wuxi rapidly replaced Suzhou as the economic centre of the Tai lake basin. The city’s name, which is translated as “without tin,” refers to the tin mines in the area that were exhausted during the Han dynasty.
