Spa Therapist Course being Validated by SQA

The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) in conjunction with BISA Spa Association are set to introduce the first official Diploma in Spa Therapies world-wide.Having undergone an extensive market research programme a clear need has been identified for a recognised qualification for spa therapists.  BISA President, Joan Thornycroft, announced recently, “We are in the happy position of working towards accreditation at diploma level and advanced diploma level, with the possibility of moving towards degree courses.”

The course is currently being written by a team of subject specialists from around the country, drawing on many years of experience gained internationally.  Validation is set to be complete by Autumn 2004 with the first courses being run at the end of the year.

Courses will be held in BISA accredited spa schools, in partnership with Further Education colleges.  It is anticipated in light of the interest shown and research carried out by the independent consultant, Jack Beck, that the course will prove extremely popular world-wide.

The course came about as a result of BISA continually being asked for qualified spa therapists by the industry.  To date the only training available was limited to courses offered by product houses and equipment manufacturers, which varied greatly in content and quality.  This course is designed to set the standards in spa therapies and provide clients in this premium market sector with the levels of care and service they expect.

This has been designed as a course for those with previous certification and experience in massage, etc..  Anatomy and physiology qualifications are a pre-requisite.  There is currently a course on offer which will serve as an entry level giving school leavers or those looking to change career a complete training path to working in a spa environment.

Work is already underway on the advanced levels, which will include spa management at degree level.  Current courses on offer in spa management are often criticised by spa owners as falling short in terms of practical knowledge and experience.  SQA and BISA aim to bridge that gap and so make their students the most desirable and employable nationally and internationally.
