Mandara Spa Ventures Ltd. (MSVL) opens at the Sheraton Sanya Resort only one month after opening its first spa in China at the JW Marriott Hotel in Shanghai. This is Mandara Spa Ventures Ltd. second spa in China and Mandara Spa’s 41st in Asia.Located on the ground level of the hotel, the spa compromises of two deluxe double spa suites, five double spa suites, one single suite, one single treatment room, two luxurious private steam suites, reception and waiting lounge and a full service beauty salon. Treatment suites features include steam showers, oversized terrazzo bathtubs and day beds with spacious private change areas.
The spa design blends traditional and contemporary architectural features, such as driftwood finished wood paneling, burlap wall coverings, wardrobes with stainless steel fixtures, dressing areas with full length mirrors and backlit light fixtures, antique wooden doors, Lai Marble stone floors and gray granite wash basins resting on unfinished wood stands.
Designed by Bensley Design Studios of Bangkok, one of Thailand’s most prestigious interior design companies, the 1,000 square meter spa incorporates traditional stone, wood and ceramic decorative pieces with cushion fabric covers in grey, peach and cream tones offering a subtle luxurious contemporary feel with a generous amount of style and sophistication. Bill Bensley, the landscape architect responsible for the hotels gardens, has expanded his interests to designing interiors. Mr. Bensley said; “I am very excited about this project as I have allowed to explore and use some rather unusual materials like wood with a driftwood finish. Here in Sanya I want to remind the guest that they are on a glorious beach in China. I used tumbled bleached marble tiles on the floor and gorgeous hand made tiles on the walls from Bali. The custom lighting fixtures were made on Phuket Island of recycled caste antiqued aluminum. Bensley Design Studios has designed and produced in Bangkok all of the many oil and water color paintings gracing the walls. I spent days selecting the Chinese antiques from the specialty antique markets of Shanghai and Beijing which make up about twenty percent of the furniture. The remainder of the furniture we designed in our Bangkok Studio”.
Access to the spa is across a bridge of wood beams bound by copper sheeting. On either side of the entrance two stately wood doors, reminiscent of China’s imperial past, remain open to expose an oversized glass door. “Oversized”, a feature that repeats itself throughout the spa interiors from spacious treatment suites and dressing areas to oversized bathtubs and daybeds.
Behind the large reception area is a spacious lounge with ample seating where guest may choose their spa treatments in a leisurely and relaxed atmosphere. The right corridor leads to two deluxe double spa suites, the single suite, single treatment room and full service beauty salon. Behind the lounge area are two double spa suites. On the left you enter through a glass door, a replica of the entrance door, out to an open walkway with ceiling fans overhead. To the right of the walkway, flanked on either side by open terraces is a garden pond surrounded by tropical foliage. To the back of the pond, six stone ladies stand tall against a high wall, each holding a basin from which water constantly flows. To the left of the walkway three double spa suites featuring oversized steam showers and at the end, two luxurious private steam suites with oversized day beds, open showers and gray granite water features.
Each double spa suite features a spacious dressing area with oversized wardrobes, dressing table with full length mirror, steam showers, and gray granite wash basins with brass fixtures. A sliding wood door separates the dressing area from the massage area which features two massage beds sitting under a canopy of interwoven lengths of cream canvas, which adds a cozy ambience to the room, an oversized bath tub and day bed. The spaciousness of the spa suites are reflected in their size ranging from approximately 50 sq. meters to 70 sq. meters each.
