St. Thomas set for annual Carnival celebrations

The 52nd annual Virgin Islands
Carnival celebrations are scheduled for April 4-May 1, 2004, on St. Thomas.
This year’s theme - “Journey Thru a Cultural Door for Carnival 2004” -
captures the vibrant cultural heritage of this lively and highly anticipated
Caribbean festival each year.
“Carnival is always an exciting time for both Virgin Islands residents and
visitors,” Commissioner Pam Richards said.  “There is fun and entertainment for
everyone - from the youngest to the oldest.  As always, our pageants,
parades, music concerts, games and cultural fairs will bring much excitement
to St. Thomas this spring as we celebrate our lively island tradition.”

Carnival celebrations will begin with the traditional pageants, which
recognise the promising futures of local youth.  Contestants in the Prince
and Princess Selection Show (April 4) and the Queen Selection Show (April
10) will showcase their talents in hopes of being crowned as part of the
Carnival Royal Court.  The Ms. V.I. American Classic Pageant (April 17) has
been added to the lineup this year to honor contestants over the age of 60,
for their contributions to the community.
