Website helps sports fans plan for 2013 holidays

The London 2012 Summer Olympics may be just a memory but holiday website Daily Travel Ideas says sports fans have plenty to look forward to in 2013.

A new online guide lists many of the major competitions in the calendar, from soccer to skiing and athletics to aquatics, taking place in the four corners of the world.

So what can sports enthusiasts look forward to?

To begin with, some of the greatest stars in athletics, including Jamaica’s triple Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, will be heading to the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia, for the biggest event in the sport after the Olympics - the World Championships. It takes place from August 10 to 18 and the USA will be looking to head the medal table following their success at London 2012.

It’s going to be a busy summer for the Luzhniki Stadium because it also hosts the Rugby World Cup Sevens - a sport that will feature in the 2016 Olympics - from June 28. The competition will feature 24 nations in the men’s event and 16 in the women’s.

Soccer’s Confederations Cup, the tournament that sees champions from each of the six FIFA confederation championships, the World Cup holder and the host nation competing for world domination, takes place in Brazil from June 15 to 30. It will be a useful test for the nation that will host the World Cup in 2014 as well as the next Summer Olympics.

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, will host Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, the 10th time the city has welcomed the biggest game in the American Football calendar.

Winter sports fans are not forgotten either. The popular resort of Schladming in Austria will host the Alpine World Ski Championships from February 4 to 17 with events ranging from downhill to slalom.

For those looking for something a little more unusual, the sands of Tahiti host the 7th FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup from September 18 to 28. Or you could head for the 2013 Games of the Small States of Europe. Luxembourg hosts this celebration of miniature nations and giants of sport from May 27 to June 1.
