Summer holidays are the best time of year. You get some time off from your day to day life and you can bask in the sun or wander around exciting new places, trying wonderful local delicacies. You can leave work behind and swap playing slots online for going on a food tour or trying a fancy wine bar.

But one of the most difficult decisions is where to go. Even though there are lots of great famous places, sometimes you want to go for something a little more off the beaten track.

If you’re stuck for ideas and have no idea where to start, there’s no need to panic - we’ve got you covered. We’ve taken a look for all the best hidden gems there are so that you can narrow down your choices and find the holiday of your dreams.

Hidden gem holiday destinations

● Ares del Maestre, Castellon, Spain

In the middle of Barcelona and Valencia you’ll find the beautiful Ares del Maestre. Located on top of a hill, the views of the surrounding landscape are second to none. This is one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Spain as it’s next to two of the top holiday destinations so it goes mostly unnoticed.

This means that you’ll be able to take in the fantastic views and sample some of the best food without being overcrowded by fellow tourists. This city has remained largely untouched since the 14th century so it’s perfect for history and architecture lovers.

Take a walk around the magnificent streets and marvel at the castle - you can take tours to learn more about it as well. A watchtower is the perfect place to take some holiday snaps of those awe inspiring views.

● Primosten, Croatia

Croatia is a popular holiday destination for those who love hot weather, beaches and beautiful city streets to wander around in. So, if you love all of those things then Primosten is the place for you.

You’ll be able to find Primosten in Dalmatia and as it’s only a 30 minute drive from Sibenik airport, it’s not too far to travel. If you love a beach bar, you’ll love Raduca Mala beach as it’s full of sea, sand and lots of wonderful food and cocktails.

There are plenty of watersports to try out in the crystal blue waters, with friendly locals who can help you get to grips with the waves. Or if you prefer to enjoy watching from afar, just throw down your towel and bask in the sun as the excitement unfolds around you.

● Lake Bokod, Hungary

Just an hour by car, or two hours via public transport from Budapest, you’ll find the glorious Lake Bokod. And on the lake is the fascinating Bokodi Floating Village. It’s exactly like the floating villas you see in the Maldives or other fancy resorts - but for a fraction of the price.

The lake is beautiful and the floating village means that you’re never more than a few steps from the water. There’s nothing more magical than waking up on the waterfront, the views are second to none.

Even if you don’t stay in one of these floating villas, a lot of them are open to visitors so you can still experience the views. There are drinks available for you to purchase as you gaze across the lake and enjoy the tranquillity.

● Naantali, Finland

If you’re not really looking for a beach holiday and want to go for something even more different and interesting, look no further. Naantali in Finland is a tiny little town in Finland with a big personality.

This is definitely one for the foodies as it’s really well known for its wonderful cuisine. There are lots of different restaurants to try out, and a lot of them are situated on the water so you can eat the best food with some miraculous views.

This might be a little niche but if you remember the Moomins, it’s also the place where they were imagined by Finnish author Tove Jansson in 1945. There’s even a whole theme park dedicated to the characters that you can visit. You can go on the rides and learn even more about the author and the characters.

● Dartlo, Georgia

And last but not least is Dartlo in Georgia. Eastern Europe is starting to become more well known as a holiday destination but Georgia is still flying relatively under the radar. This place is perfect for mountain lovers as the ranges in Europe.

If you love hiking and being active on your holidays, this is the option for you. The old town is perfect to wander round and soak up the rich history of the place. And the hiking trails are some of the best that you can find. The views are incredible and you’re sure to make everyone jealous with your holiday snaps.
