World Travel Awards winners celebrate at ITB Berlin
Winners of the prestigious World Travel Awards have been celebrating their success at ITB Berlin, with Leading Hotels of the World chief among them. Europcar, Etihad Airways, and TDIC Abu Dhabi were also on hand as Breaking Travel News caught up with the lucky few.
Virgin Atlantic announces recruitment drive
It may be up for sale, but that hasn’t dampened spirits at Virgin Atlantic, with the airline confirming a recruitment drive today. In total Virgin Atlantic – recognised by the World Travel Awards as offering the World’s Leading Airline Business Class – hopes to create 350 cabin crew roles and 50 pilot posts, with a further 50 jobs added at head office.

With the excitement of the opening ceremonies fading, ITB Berlin today got down to business, with 25,000 trade visitors expected to pass through the turnstiles. Poland – as partner country for the 45th annual exhibition – topped many visitors lists of must see attractions, with the country reporting a strong recovery in visitor numbers over the previous year.
Joburg Tourism celebrates at ITB Berlin
While thousands of visitors thronged through the gates of ITB Berlin, Johannesburg Tourism Company was taking a more relaxed approach, hosting an invitation only event at the South African embassy. Guests were treated to presentations from leading members of the organisation, including JTC chief executive Lindiwe Kwele, as the destination recounted the successes of 2010 and look forward to the coming year.
Minister for tourism launches Brand Jamaica at ITB Berlin
Jamaican minister for Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, has taken time out from important negotiations with the travel industry at ITB Berlin, to launch the cornerstone marketing strategy for 2011 - Brand Jamaica. The move comes at exciting time for Jamaica, with a number of new developments bringing the luxury destination to international attention.
World Travel Awards unveils regional nominees
World Travel Awards has today unveiled the regional nominees for the 2011 awards at ITB Berlin. Over 5,000 organisations from across 160 countries will be competing in over 900 categories, with the nominees of the World categories to be announced at the end of September.
Emirates Palace makes a splash at ITB Berlin
As ITB Berlin opens, Emirates Palace is presenting its spring and summer holiday packages with the intent of attracting an influx of high-end vacationers to Abu Dhabi. The property – voted the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Hotel by the World Travel Awards - will use the event to present its offering to more than 180,000 visitors.
Visitor numbers rocket in Dubai
Dubai has reported a strong surge in interest as the United Arab Emirate continues to recover from the global economic slump. Releasing its latest figures earlier, Dubai Tourism & Commerce Marketing confirmed destination had hosted 8.3 million international guests in 2010, a 9.4 per cent increase over 2009.

St Lucia, which was voted “World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination” at the 2010 World Travel Awards, registered a double-digit growth in arrivals.
Inter Milan win World Club Cup in Abu Dhabi
FC Internazionale Milano have won the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010, maintaining Europe’s recent stranglehold on the title with a convincing 3-0 win over TP Mazembe Englebert at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium. Hosted by Abu Dhabi, the tournament brings to a close a fine year for the emirate.
Unions and poor infrastructure are hindering legacy carriers, say Etihad chief
European and North American airlines are falling behind due to unions, poorly-located hubs and outdated infrastructure, according to James Hogan, the chief executive of Etihad Airways. He made the remarks in response to British Airways, Chief Executive, Willie Walsh who said European export credit agencies are unfairly subsiding the growth of Middle Eastern carriers.
