Continental to cut 1,700 jobs
Continental Airlines is to cut 1,700 jobs amid a drop-off in revenue and passenger numbers, as it unveiled widening quarterly losses of $214m. But its rivals United and Southwest fared much better, with quarterly profits that provide the strongest hint yet of a recovery in US aviation.
Green shoots for American aviation
America’s aviation heavyweights have reported their passenger numbers for June, with improvements in transatlantic traffic suggesting the green shoots of a recovery could be appearing. Passenger numbers at Delta, the world’s largest airline in market capitalisation, fell 4.6% year-on-year to 14.89m in June. But encouraging signs that the transatlantic market may have bottomed out, with loads rising 0.5 percent to 85.6%.
