The St. Regis Langkawi Resort set for April opening in Malaysia
St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, has announced the brand’s debut property in Malaysia. Scheduled to open on April 6th, The St. Regis Langkawi Resort will become the first luxury resort to open within the last decade in Malaysia’s coveted “Island Jewel of Southeast Asia”.
Marriott back in the driving seat for Starwood merger
Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide have confirmed that the companies have signed an amendment to their definitive merger agreement that creates the world’s largest hotel company. Under the terms of the amended merger agreement, Starwood shareholders will receive $21 in cash and 0.80 shares of Marriott International Class A common stock for each share of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide common stock.
Starwood plans expansion into Cuba as Obama begins historic visit
Starwood Hotels & Resorts has signed three new hotel deals in Cuba, marking the first United States-based hospitality company to enter the market in nearly 60 years. The news comes as president Barak Obama visits the Caribbean island today. He becomes the first sitting American president to land in Cuba since his predecessor Calvin Coolidge visited 88 years ago.
Starwood expands in Florida
Starwood Hotels & Resorts is increasing their footprint in Florida with the addition of at least 9 hotels slated to open in the next three years. Starwood will reach 30 hotels in the state across its Aloft, Element and Four Points brands by 2019 year end, an increase of more than 40 percent.
Starwood debuts Aloft brand in Paraguay
Starwood Hotels & Resorts is set to debut its Aloft brand in Paraguay with the opening of Aloft Asuncion. Aloft is set to more than double its footprint in Latin America from six to 13 hotels by 2018, with new openings in Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
Luxury Collection opens first Tokyo property
The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts, part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, has announced it will debut the brand’s first hotel in Tokyo in July 2016. Owned by Prince Hotels, The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, a Luxury Collection Hotel, will be located in the heart of Tokyo’s Kioicho neighbourhood, marking brand’s second property in Japan, following the opening of Suiran in Kyoto in April 2015.
Starwood expands footprint in Thailand
Starwood Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement with Grand Bay Hotel, to unveil the Sheraton Phuket Grand Bay Resort. Slated to open in January 2019 on Thailand’s largest island, the hotel will support the brand’s Sheraton 2020 goal of adding 150 hotels in the next five years.
Starwood welcomes Design Hotels to portfolio
Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced an expanded partnership with Design Hotels, which consumers will see as an 11th Starwood brand. The move comes just seven months after Starwood launched its tenth brand, Tribute Portfolio. Since 2011, Starwood has been a majority but passive investor in the Berlin-based Design Hotels, which for more than two decades has served as a global distribution, sales and marketing affiliation for nearly 300 independently owned and operated hotels and resorts united by the vision of bold, diverse hoteliers, known as “Originals.”
Westin Soma Bay Golf Resort opens in Egypt
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has opened the Westin Soma Bay Golf Resort & Spa at Somabay, marking the debut of the Westin brand in Egypt. Located on its own peninsula, just south of Hurghada on the Red Sea, Somabay offers the perfect beach holiday getaway.
Marriott merges with Starwood in $12bn deal
Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide have announced that the boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved a definitive merger agreement under which the companies will create the world’s largest hotel company. The transaction combines Starwood’s leading lifestyle brands and international footprint with Marriott’s strong presence in the luxury and select-service tiers, as well as the convention and resort segment, creating a more comprehensive portfolio.
St. Regis coming to Shanghai as Starwood signs property deal
Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced the signing of an agreement with Shanghai Huayu Real Estate to bring its ultra-luxury St. Regis brand to Shanghai. Scheduled for completion in early 2017, The St. Regis Shanghai Jingan will open its doors in one of the most exclusive, sought-after locations in the heart of the city’s central business district.
Starwood capitalises on Africa growth with new properties
Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced aggressive expansion in Africa and Indian Ocean, increasing its market penetration across the region. Today the company has a strong footprint with 34 operating hotels and a robust pipeline of 20 hotels under development. With the expansion of its luxury, upper upscale and mid-market brands, Starwood will grow its portfolio by over 50 per cent in the next five years, with more than 50 hotels operating and nine out of its ten compelling lifestyle brands flying their flag in the region.
