Star Alliance has welcomed Avianca, TACA Airlines and Copa Airlines as members, thereby cementing its presence in Latin America and adding close to 50 new airports to the network. The development means passengers will now be able to connect seamlessly through the Copa Airlines hubs in Panama City (Panama) and Bogota (Colombia) and the Avianca, TACA Airlines hubs in Bogota (Colombia), San Salvador (El Salvador), Lima (Peru) and San Jose (Costa Rica).

Lufthansa Systems today announced that Star Alliance has recently extended the contract for operating the global Star Data Network by another five years. This decision underscores the trust Star Alliance places in Lufthansa Systems’ managed WAN solution. Star Data Network connects the member carriers’ IT systems, guaranteeing the nonstop exchange of data between 26 international airlines.

The chief executive board of Star Alliance has unanimously accepted the membership application of EVA Air of Taiwan. Mark Schwab, chief executive of Star Alliance, said: “EVA Air is a very good fit for Star Alliance as the airline will add many new routes to our global network, with a specific focus on the growing Far East aviation market.”
