BAA concedes defeat in Heathrow third runway
BAA has formally conceded defeat in its campaign for a third runway at London’s Heathrow Airport by withdrawing its planning application. The airport operator has also ditched plans for a second runway at Stansted following the election of the new government.
Premier Inn set to open new airport hotels
Premier Inn will be opening four new hotels at London’s main airports from Autumn 2011. The budget hotel chain will open two hotels at Heathrow and one at Gatwick and one at Stansted, creating a total of 1,570 new rooms. Premier Inn is spending more than £125 million on the developments.
Ryanair cuts Stansted capacity 40%
Ryanair has announced a 40% cutback in capacity to its Stansted services this winter, with the number of operational aircraft dropping from 40 to 24. The low-cost carrier says this represents a 30% reduction in the number of weekly flights and a loss of 2.5m passengers at the Essex airport between October 2009 and March 2010.
MPs delay Stansted runway inquiry
The planning inquiry into the construction of a second runway at Stansted airport has been put on hold by MPs due to uncertainly over its future ownership.Hazel Blears, the communities and local government secretary, has bowed to growing pressure from opponents of the second runway and agreed that the planning inquiry be delayed.
Protesters wreak havoc at Stansted
Stansted Airporthas been thrown into chaos after protesters forced the airport to close by chaining themselves to railings next to the runway.More than 50 demonstrators from the Plane Stupid environmental group cut through fencing in the early hours of Monday morning, in a protest against plans to build a second runway.
