Dixon takes over top position at NYC & Company
New York mayor Bill de Blasio has announced the appointment of Fred Dixon as chief executive of NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organisation. Dixon will succeed George Fertitta who stepped down earlier this year.
Marriott brings tallest hotel in North America to New York
Marriott International and G Holdings have announced the opening of an iconic addition to the New York City skyline, a combined 378-room Courtyard hotel and 261-suite Residence Inn hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The $320 million tallest single-use hotel in North America is located at 1717 Broadway.
Bloomberg reveals New York tourism records
Outgoing New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has confirmed the city will reach 54.3 million visitors in 2013, a new all-time high and an increase of nearly 20 million additional annual tourists from 2002. By the end of this year, visitors to New York City will have generated $58.7 billion in overall economic impact and $39.4 billion in direct spending, while jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector are anticipated to reach a monthly average of more than 370,000 by year’s end, demonstrating the importance of the tourism and hospitality industry to New York City and its economy.
Ellis Island to reopen to public
Ellis Island Immigration Museum, part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, will reopen to the public on Monday for the first time since Hurricane Sandy submerged the island a year ago. “We are delighted to be able to share Ellis Island’s uniquely American story with the world once more,” said superintendent David Luchsinger.
Dozens hurt in New York ferry crash
Dozens of people have been injured after a New York passenger ferry hit a dock during the Manhattan rush hour. A hole was torn in the bow of the vessel, the Seastreak Wall Street, during the incident, with 11 people seriously injured.
Subrata Roy picks up Plaza Hotel in New York
Indian billionaire Subrata Roy has completed the purchase of the Plaza Hotel in New York for US$575 million. Sahara group, controlled by Roy, also bought the luxury hotel Dream New York from hotelier Vikram Chatwal for US$220 million.
New York records increase in visitor numbers
Tourism officials in New York are celebrating after welcoming a record 52 million visitors in 2012. This comes despite the impact of super-storm Sandy, which hit the city late last year causing days of flight cancellations and disruption.
Bloomberg plans major tourism overhaul for Staten Island, New York
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has unveiled plans to transform the waterfront on Staten Island with the construction of the world’s largest Ferris wheel. A new retail complex and hotel, built on sites adjacent to Richmond County Bank Ballpark in St. George, also form part of the proposals.
Tornadoes hit New York city
Two tornadoes have hit New York City’s borough of Queens and Brooklyn, causing damage to residential areas and power cuts. No serious injuries have been reported.
