Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat, the managing director of the Jordan Tourism Board, has counselled tour groups are still running as scheduled following a terror attack in the country over the weekend. “Visitors continue to fly into our airports and we do not expect this incident to affect the tourism sector as Jordan remains to be an oasis of calm in a turbulent region,” said Arabiyat.

An ancient tomb has been discovered in Jordan in the northern town of Beit Ras during an excavation project to expand a local waste-water sanitation network. The tomb includes a cave with two burial chambers. The larger chamber contains a basalt stone rock-cut tomb decorated with raised etchings of two lion heads and with several human bones enclosed.

The Jordanian government has approved several measures to uplift the tourism sector, designed to make travelling to Jordan more convenient for people of all nationalities. Most significantly visa fees are to be waived for tourists of all nationalities with immediate effect. The move applies to visitors coming through Jordanian tour operators, whether travelling individually or in groups.

Jordan waives departure tax to Aqaba

Departure tax for tourists travelling in groups to Jordan flying into the Red Sea resort of Aqaba will be waived until next year as part of wider efforts to boost visitors to the destination the tourism board has announced. Groups flying on low cost carriers and charter flights into Aqaba’s King Hussein Airport will no longer be required to pay the departure tax of 40JOD (£34) per person until February 26th 2015 following a decision made by the ministry of finance.

The Jordan Tourist Board has announced a growth of 20 per cent in UK visitor numbers in August 2013 – a record number of visitors for that month. Jordan welcomed 5,707 UK tourists to the country in August 2013, compared to 4,754 the previous year.
