JAL extends free transportation to support Philippines relief effort

Japan Airlines (JAL) extends its condolence to those affected by Typhoon Ketsana that hit the Philippines. It will provide from Japan, free transport of relief goods and aid personnel bound for Manila at the request of any non-profit public organizations based in Japan, such as the Japanese Red Cross, and other Japanese aid organizations that the airline has worked with in the past.

Japan Airlines is teetering on the brink of collapse as the government refused calls to save it from a $15 billion debt pile yesterday (September 24). A Japanese government task force has now been formed which may split the carrier into “good” and “bad” parts. It will report back at the end of November.

Japan’s new transport minister has said JAL, it’s national carrier must not be allowed to fail, suggesting the state would support the loss-making airline as it seeks fresh funding for a major cost-cutting plan. JAl has revealed it will cut 14 percent of its workers, or 6,800 employees, over the next three years as part of a restructuring plan.

Japan Airlines has announced it will cut its workforce by 14%, or 6,800 employees, in a bid to stave off bankruptcy. The national flag carrier has been mired in union negotiations since reporting its biggest quarterly loss of almost $1 billion in the three months to the end of June. The news comes at the same time as two US carriers are making a play for a stake in the airline.
