Hurricane Irene wreaking havoc on Caribbean tourism

Authorities on the east coast of the United States are bracing for the impact of Hurricane Irene. Expected to make landfall over the weekend, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season is considered a class 3 storm – bringing winds of up to 115 miles per hour – and is expected to gather strength in the coming hours.

A state of emergency has been declared across the Caribbean island of St Lucia following the impact of Hurricane Tomas. As many as 14 people are feared dead following the hurricane, with a further seven declared missing. Jamaica also remains on high alert.
