Visitors to France are being warned to expect severe disruption today, as eight of the largest unions in the country call workers out on strike. In a lingering dispute over pensions – which will see the minimum retirement age raise from 60 to 62 – rail and aviation workers are expected to join the protests.

A forest fire in the South of France that forced the evacuation of thousands of holidaymakers is reported to be “under control”. The blaze, which police have blamed on arsonists, started on Saturday close to oil refineries near Marseille, has destroyed large areas of woodland.
