King Ramses II takes up position outside new Grand Egyptian Museum
The colossal 11 metre high statue of King Ramses II - crafted 3,200 years ago and weighing 75 tonnes – has moved to its new permanent home in the grand entrance hall of the Grand Egyptian Museum. The new attraction is scheduled to open in November.
New Egyptian tourism minister appointed as industry seeks recovery
The Egyptian parliament has approved the appointment of Rania Al-Mashat as the country’s new minister of tourism. The decision means Al-Mashat will become the first woman to hold the position and is now one of six women to currently occupy ministerial roles in the country – the nation’s highest ever proportion.
Russia to resume commercial flights to Egypt following two year hiatus
Russian president Vladimir Putin has authorised commercial flights between Egypt and Russia to resume following a two-year suspension. The move is expected to place further pressure on the British government to review their own stance on flights to Egypt.

The Egyptian Tourism Authority is predicting 2017 as a year of growth from the UK following the launch of a new flight between Heathrow and Luxor and consumer research showing a demand from British people looking for better value holidays in 2017. The Egyptian minister of tourism, Yehia Rashed, speaking at London’s World Travel Market said a tourism recovery strategy for Egypt was underway with major advertising and trade campaigns planned for the year ahead to raise awareness of the fact that Egypt is open for business.
Monarch pulls out of Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt
Monarch has confirmed it is cancelling all flight and holiday bookings to Sharm El-Sheikh for the foreseeable future. With no indication from the British government as to when the airport will re-open to flights from the UK, the airline is cancelling all flight and holiday bookings for winter 2016/17 and there are now no plans for the destination to be part of Monarch’s summer 2017 programme.

The city of Luxor in Egypt is hosting the 104th meeting of the executive council of the World Tourism Organisation today. The meeting will discuss the three priorities of the organisation for 2016-2017: safe, secure and seamless travel; the impact of technology in the tourism sector; and sustainability.
Egyptian Tourist Authority to welcome UNWTO to Luxor
The ministry of tourism and Egyptian Tourist Authority have announced their sponsorship of the 104th session of the World Tourism Organisation Executive Council in Luxor. The event will be held from October 30-31st, 2016. Luxor is also hosting the fifth UNWTO Global Summit on City Tourism, attended by representatives and participants from many different countries all over the world.

The Egyptian Tourism Authority has announced it will re-launch its hugely successful Red Sea Riviera logo for its marketing activities in the UK, as part of plans to extend the Red Sea Riviera brand to other resorts. The initiative will see the logo used by the Egypt Tourism Authority and UK tour operators in promotional activities and advertising campaigns to remind holidaymakers of the allure of the Red Sea, thanks to its luxury resorts, clear blue skies and sandy beaches.
Egypt welcomes UNWTO flight ban call
The Egyptian minister of tourism, Yehia Rashed, has welcomed the UNWTO’s call for the lifting of any unnecessary bans on travel for tourists. The UNWTO comments were made at the start of the UNWTO Executive Council meeting in Malaga, Spain.
Russia confirms terrorism downed Sinai aircraft
FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov has confirmed to Russian president Vladimir Putin that an “act of terror” brought down a Russian A321 airliner in Egypt last month. The Russian security chief said “traces of foreign explosives” were found amid debris from the Airbus plane.
