Caribbean Tourism Organisation welcomes APD cut in Northern Ireland

Officials at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation have welcomed a decision by UK chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne to cut Air Passenger Duty on long-haul flights departing from Northern Ireland. The decision was confirmed at the end of September and will see the direct long-haul rate of APD fall to the lower short-haul rate - £12 per passenger in economy and £24 for business and first class passengers.

The secretary general of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, Hugh Riley, has called on tourism interests in the Americas “to educate our populations to the true potential of this marvellously resilient, yet incredibly vulnerable industry”. Tourism in the region will be celebrated by World Travel Awards later this month when Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica, plays hose to the annual Caribbean & the Americas Gala Ceremony.

The Caribbean Tourism Organisation and NTA have created a new partnership to promote opportunities to tourism businesses in the over 30 member countries in the region. Under the terms of the deal, NTA tour operators will also be offered easier access to Caribbean destinations.

Officials at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation have welcomed an announcement from UK chancellor George Osborne Air Passenger Duty will not rise this year. The chancellor’s statement that the arbitrary nature of the bands “appeared to believe the Caribbean was further away than California,” is also a clear recognition of a crucial issue raised by the organisation during lobbying efforts to have the tax reformed.
