PromPeru claims culinary title at World Travel Awards

PromPeru claims culinary title at World Travel Awards Alavaro Santisteban with the World Travel Awards trophy

PromPeru, the trade, tourism and investment office of Peru in the United Arab Emirates, is pleased to announce that Peru won the title of World’s Leading Culinary Destination at the World Travel Awards 2013.

Peru’s eclectic cuisine has earned acknowledgement as one of the world’s finest and is proud to take home the award for the second year in a row, having beaten beat off Australia, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and the United States of America.

Peru is currently experiencing a gastronomic boom and 42 per cent of the tourists visiting this country say that Peruvian cuisine is one of the aspects that most influences their choice of Peru as a tourist destination.

Thanks to the geographically and climatologically favorable conditions that it enjoys, the Peruvian sea offers an aray of fish from scallops and pacific mackerel to anchovies and mahi-mahi, asserting why ceviche has become a world favourite.

Peru also produces excellent quality fruit and vegetables and ranks number one exporter for asparagus, paprika, organic coffee and organic bananas.

With dreamy beaches along its lengthy coastline, the unexplored charm of virgin nature reserves and the magic of the world of the Andes all to boast, it is actually Peru’s cuisine that has the whole world talking.

Peruvian cuisine is a melting pot of different cultures which have come together to form a unique blend of flavours and techniques.

With the arrival of European and Asian immigrants centuries ago, their ingredients and customs intertwined over the years, creating what is known as Peruvian cuisine; one of the fastest growing gastronomic movements today with many accolades and awards on an international level.

For the past 20 years, the World Travel Awards have recognised and celebrated excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.

Alvaro Silva-Santisteban, director, PromPeru in the United Arab Emirates, who received the award on behalf of Peru at La Cigale hotel in Doha commented: “We are very greatful to have won this prestigious award for a consecutive year and are proud to be known as a gastronomic superpower.

“It is a tribute to our culture, ancient heritage and fresh products, but moreover to the creativity of our chefs and restaurateurs.”
