Fairmont Le Ch Teau Frontenac Awarded 5 Green Keys by Green Key Global
In its ongoing pursuit of improvements in sustainable development, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is honored to announce the achievement of its 5th Green Key awarded by Green Key Global, a prestigious recognition that reflects its deep commitment to the environment. This certification, along with its Biosphere certification obtained this year, highlights the iconic establishment’s sustained efforts to enhance its environmental impact while promoting sustainable tourism. Travelers will continue to enjoy unparalleled experiences that evolve in an eco-conscious environment.
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac successfully achieved this ultimate Green Key Global certification, the 5th GreenKey, through a rigorous process. The selection criteria based on energy conservation, community awareness, water conservation, building infrastructure, solid and hazardous waste management, land use, environmental management, and indoor air quality. The Château has brilliantly demonstrated its profound commitment to these
sustainable practices and is now among the eight hotels in the province holding a level 5 key, the highest level of recognition, alongside Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth and Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu. For this historic hotel, it is
a source of great pride that aligns with a vision of continuous improvement.
“Sustainability and environmental preservation are at the core of Fairmont Le Château Frontenac’s values. With this 5th Green Key, a symbol of the progress made, we commit to continually reducing our ecological footprint and
inspiring our guests and other actors of the industry to adopt sustainable practices while offering an exceptional experience,” says Mr. Jean-François Vary, General Manager of Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.
KEY INITIATIVES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Holding 4 Green Keys for over 10 years, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac has collaborated with numerous partners in recent years to achieve an additional key. Notably, its strategic partnership with Laval University enabled the
hotel to achieve carbon neutrality in 2020 while significantly contributing to the advancements of knowledge and science in the fight against climate change.
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac also takes pride in integrating sustainable practices into its world-class gastronomy.
In summer, over 80% of ingredients come from local sources, and the hotel features a rooftop chef’s garden, offers organic wines, seasonal recipes, gourmet quality zero-kilometer water, and flexible options for various dietary
preferences. The hotel is committed to reducing food waste and promoting eco-responsible practices at every stage of the consumption chain. The establishment also has beehives on its roof to support bees, essential pollinators for our ecosystem. With four hives housing nearly 70,000 bees, the hotel produces up to 650 pounds of honey each year. This honey, harvested twice a year, enriches the Château’s kitchens and cocktails, blending sustainable development with local gastronomy.

Additionally, the management of products, waste, water, and energy is at the forefront of Fairmont Le Château Frontenac’s concerns. Considerable efforts are made to optimize water and energy consumption, such as the
installation of smart thermostats, LED lights, and replacing showerheads, toilets, and sinks in all hotel rooms, saving 50% of water annually. The establishment also uses eco-friendly cleaning products, recycles many materials,
and has eliminated single-use plastics. Measures such as installing electric vehicle charging stations and offering eco-friendly transportation services demonstrate the hotel’s ongoing commitment to sustainable management.
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is grateful for this 5th Green Key and continues to demonstrate its leadership in sustainability while providing an unmatched experience for its visitors.
