Southwest Airlines Reports August Traffic Up 12.5 Percent

Southwest Airlines Co. announced today that the Company flew 3.8 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in August 2000, a 12.5 percent increase from the 3.4 billion RPMs flown in August 1999. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 12.6 percent to 5.2 billion from the August 1999 level of 4.6 billion. The load factor for the month was 72.1 percent, compared to 72.2 percent for the same period last year.

For the first eight months of 2000, Southwest flew 28.1 billion RPMs, compared to the 24.3 billion RPMs recorded for the same period of 1999, an increase of 15.6 percent. Available seat miles increased 13.6 percent to 39.2 billion from the 1999 level of 34.5 billion. The year-to-date load factor was 71.7 percent, up 1.3 points from the same period last year.
