Cozumel prepares for Carnival

The carnival season is gradually gaining momentum and the island of Cozumel is gearing up for its celebrations, Feb 22-28, 2006.  Rich in tradition, Cozumel’s
family-friendly version of Mardi Gras offers travellers a one-of-a-kind experience
filled with vibrant costumes, exciting parades and exhilarating dance troupes.

One of the most popular celebrations in the Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel has
commemorated this pre-Lenten celebration for nearly 100 years as a way to remember,
honour and share their rich and diverse past with people from other cultures.
“Cozumeleños” of every age take to the streets throughout the week bringing Carnaval
to life in an exciting explosion of colour and music.

“Carnaval is Cozumel’s grandest celebration. It focuses on family and tradition and
is unlike any other festival of its kind,” said Raul Marrufo, director of the
Cozumel Tourism Promotion Board.

“It’s the perfect time for families and travellers
from all walks of life to visit the island. They can learn about the true spirit of
Cozumel while enjoying all the different and exciting festivities taking place for
Carnaval. Cozumel’s Carnaval festival provides an unforgettable vacation experience
for any traveller.”
