St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon attracts international competitors

St. Croix will host its
largest triathlon ever on May 2, 2004.  Nearly 900 international triathletes
will endure a rigorous course through St. Croix’ beautiful countryside and
sparkling blue waters, while competing for qualifying spots in the Ironman
Triathlon World Championship.
“The Department of Tourism is proud to be the title sponsor of this
international sports event,” Richards said.  “I am always amazed by the
strength and endurance of the triathletes who compete in the St. Croix Half
Ironman event.”

The 16th Annual St. Croix Triathlon will welcome triathletes from around the
world this spring.  Each competitor will endure an arduous, three-part
course, including a 1.24 mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run,
amidst the breathtaking, scenic backdrop of St. Croix’ Caribbean vistas.
The top 30 finishers, based upon age group, will earn a qualifying spot in
the Ironman Triathlon World Championship.

The world’s top-ranked triathletes, including Ironman champions Heather
Fuhr, Nina Kraft and Natascha Badmann in the women’s division, are expected
to compete this year.
St. Croix’ Half Ironman Triathlon continues to grow
in popularity, giving participants who want to compete in the ultimate
Ironman championship the opportunity to train in similar race conditions.

Triathlon director Tom Guthrie said, “The 2004 race will be the largest race
ever held on St. Croix.  The people of the island and the beauty of the
course have helped make us a world-class event.”
