Bahrain to host UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism 18-19 November
The 9th UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism – organised by UN Tourism, the Basque Culinary Centre and the Government of Bahrain – will take place in Manama, Bahrain’s capital city, 18-19 November 2024. This event, themed “Gastronomy Tourism: A Driver for Economic Diversification and Inclusion,” marks the Forum’s debut in the Middle East, a region renowned for its rich culinary heritage and cultural exchange.
Gastronomy tourism provides destinations with a unique opportunity to diversify their tourism offerings, stimulate local economies and empower communities by involving them directly in value-generating activities. It enhances the tourism value chain by connecting consumers with producers, fostering resilience and supporting rural development, while offering authentic and diverse experiences that appeal to modern travellers.
Bahrain, an archipelago on the southwestern coast of the Arabian Gulf, is renowned for its food and gastronomy, a delightful blend of flavours and influences from various culture. Bahrain’s cuisine is a mix of Arabic, Persian, Indian, Balochi, African, Far Eastern and European elements, creating a unique culinary experience.
This year’s Forum will explore how gastronomy tourism can promote rural development, economic diversification and inclusion, emphasising the importance of engaging all stakeholders across the value chain. Sustainability will be a central theme, with discussions on reducing food waste, local sourcing and implementing sustainable practices throughout the food chain.
Key topics will cover destination branding through gastronomy tourism and the policy frameworks essential for sustainable growth. Best practices and strategies will be shared via panel discussions, presentations, masterclasses and thematic visits. These sessions will unite destinations and experts to showcase the transformative power of gastronomy tourism in fostering resilience, cohesion and sustainability.
