Chihuahua Discovery Travel Market: A New Platform for Tourism Growth in Mexico.
The inaugural Chihuahua Discovery Travel Market, held from 18-22 September in Chihuahua, Mexico, marked a significant milestone for the state’s tourism sector. Organised by the Chihuahua Tourism Board, this event aimed to position the region as a prime destination for adventure, nature, and cultural tourism, offering a glimpse into the wealth of experiences Chihuahua has to offer.
The event brought together 34 suppliers, including hotels, tour operators, and local service providers, with 43 buyers from Mexico, the UK, Colombia, and the USA. Over the course of the first day, participants engaged in B2B meetings designed to foster new partnerships and collaborations aimed at boosting the region’s tourism profile. This business-driven agenda was complemented by valuable networking opportunities, allowing stakeholders to build relationships and exchange ideas.
A major highlight of the event was the post-fam tour, which offered attendees an immersive journey through some of northern Mexico’s most iconic and breathtaking landscapes. Participants embarked on the renowned Chepe Express Train, known for its scenic route through rugged canyons and mountainous terrain, offering unparalleled views of the region’s natural beauty.
The tour kicked off in the state capital, Chihuahua, where participants explored the city’s historical and cultural heritage. Visits included stops at the Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the Pancho Villa Museum, offering a deep dive into the local history, all while enjoying traditional cuisine.
One of the standout experiences was the stop at Divisadero, a gateway to the famous Copper Canyon, where participants had the chance to engage in adventure tourism activities such as hiking, zip-lining, and riding a cable car across the massive gorge. The dramatic views of the Copper Canyon left a lasting impression on all who attended, highlighting the region’s appeal to adventure seekers.
The tour continued to the Magical Town of Creel, celebrated for its indigenous Rarámuri culture and its scenic surroundings, including Lake Arareco and the Valley of the Monks, both well-known for their serene beauty and spiritual significance. The journey ended in Cuauhtémoc, a town rich in Mennonite heritage, offering a unique cultural experience that included local tours and a taste of the community’s culinary traditions.
The mix of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural richness showcased during the post-fam tour provided a well-rounded view of Chihuahua’s tourism potential. By offering these hands-on experiences, the Chihuahua Discovery Travel Market not only promoted the state’s attractions but also aimed to attract national and international tourism operators to include these destinations in future itineraries.
Julio Chavez Ventura, the Director of the Chihuahua Tourism Board said: “I expect this event to significantly enhance our visibility and appeal in the tourism market over the next few months. We anticipate fostering valuable connections between local suppliers and national and international buyers, which will lead to increased collaboration and innovative tourism packages. Ultimately, we envision the Chihuahua Discovery Travel Market as a catalyst for sustainable tourism growth in our region, positioning it as the premier B2B event in Northern Mexico”.
This event established a strong foundation for Chihuahua as a growing hub for experiential travel, aiming to draw tourists looking for authentic and diverse experiences. With its first successful edition, the market sets the stage for further development and international attention in the years to come, solidifying Chihuahua’s place on the global travel map.
