Whitbread – which operates Premier Inn and Costa Coffee in the UK – has reported strong sales growth for the 50 weeks to February 11th 2012. In total the group recorded an 11 per cent increase in total sales and confirmed it will create 10,000 jobs in the UK over the next three years.
Whitbread PLC – operator of Premier Inn and Costa Coffee – reported a 3.9 per cent increase in like-for-like sales for the fourth quarter. Separately, the company – the largest hotel and coffee shop chain in the UK - announced the acquisition of Coffee Nation.
Profits at Whitbread jumped by 43 per cent to £151m in the six months to September, following a surge in demand at the Costa Coffee chain. Continued expansion and a strong advertising spend also saw profits rise at the Premier Inn chain.
Strong performance at Premier Inn has continued to boost sales at Whitbread. The hotel chain saw like-for-like sales increase by 10.7 per cent in the 24 weeks to August, with cost-conscience business travellers increasingly turning to the chain over more expensive options.
Premier Inn is set for launch in Qatar following the inking of a joint venture agreement with regional hospitality specialist Dohaland. The first property to open under the terms of the deal will be situated in Doha Education City and is expected to open next year.
Hotel and restaurant chain Whitbread has enjoyed a strong start to the financial year, as budget chain Premier Inn led the way. Overall the group – which also operates the Costa Coffee, Brewers Fayre and Beefeater brands - recorded a like-for-like sales increased of 7.6 per cent over the 13 weeks to June 3rd.
